New Piercing Care and Maintenance

What to expect in the early stages of healing:

During the first few weeks of healing, it’s likely that you will experience the following:

Localised pain, localised swelling, discharge of a clear or cloudy fluid, bruising and bleeding. Discharge of a clear or cloudy fluid may continue for several months with slow healing piercings.

These are very normal and you may experience none, some, or all of these to a degree and still have a very healthy piercing.

Do not touch, pick, twist or apply cosmetics to your piercing.

Showering

Showering is an excellent way to clean your piercing. Make sure to give it a good blast with the shower head, this will also remove any “crusties” from your piercing in a natural way without you picking. Be careful not to use a loofah or shower pouf on or around your piercing in case of snagging, they also harbour bacteria.

Drying

As soon as your piercing has been cleaned in the shower it must be dried. The safest way to do this is with a hairdryer on a cool setting. Another material you can use is lint free gauze which is inexpensive and will not leave bits of cotton fluff at the wound site. Do not use toilet paper.

Downsizing

Some piercings need to be downsized after a few weeks/months. Your piercer should let you know about this. If unsure then please message and ask. Initial piercings will always be done with a slightly longer bar so that your piercing has room to swell. Once the swelling has subsided you want to return to the studio and get it downsized so that it can continue to heal properly. Failure to do this on your part may result in lumps and bumps and migration that might not be fixable. Downsizing doesn’t have to happen on a set date as we all heal at our own pace but your piercer should always give you an idea as to when that might be.

All in all, the best way to look after your piercing is to look after yourself. Stay hydrated, get enough sleep, eat healthy and don’t sleep on your piercing! Memory foam travel pillows for the win here!

Any questions or problems please let me know!

Happy healing!
